What’s that talent do? Marksman (part 1)

Hi everybody! (hi Dr. Nick Morynne!!)

Today we’re going to talk about the first 3 things you should spec into in the actual Marksman tree.

First off, I want to say there’s many different ways to skin a cat on this part, so take what I’ve got here and think about what your goals are for your character.  My main goal is end game raiding, not PvP really, so please take that into consideration.

Lethal Shots

  • Rank 1 – Increases your critical strike chance with ranged weapons by 1%.
  • Rank 2 – Increases your critical strike chance with ranged weapons by 2%.
  • Rank 3 – Increases your critical strike chance with ranged weapons by 3%.
  • Rank 4 – Increases your critical strike chance with ranged weapons by 4%.
  • Rank 5 – Increases your critical strike chance with ranged weapons by 5%.

Again, pretty simple… this ultimately increases your damage output.  The more frequently you have a critical strike, the more damage you’re doing.

Why not Improved Concussive Shot, or Focused Aim?

Well, Concussive Shot doesn’t have a lot of use in a PvE situation for raiding — save a fight like Saurfang where you have to slow things down to kite them.  Really not worth the points, in my opinion.  The additional damage will let you kill those mobs a faster, which is the ultimate goal.

Focused Aim is the wild card here, if you’re running low on hit, I highly recommend this.  Remember, 8% is the hit cap for most hunters, 7% for Draenei.  If you can’t hit these targets with your gear, get some help from your spec.  Don’t sacrifice your points from Lethal Shots though, you’ll cut something else later on down the tree, which I will cover in the next couple days.

Careful Aim

  • Rank 1 – Increases your ranged attack power by an amount equal to 33% of your total Intellect.
  • Rank 2 – Increases your ranged attack power by an amount equal to 66% of your total Intellect.
  • Rank 3 – Increases your ranged attack power by an amount equal to 100% of your total Intellect.

As a Marksman, Agility and AP = more damage, always.  Now Ghostcrawler said hunters are dumb in Cataclysm at Blizzcon 2009 (not relying on mana or intellect anymore at all), so you can expect this talent to be completely reworked at the expansion.

Mortal Shots

  • Rank 1 – Increases the critical strike damage bonus of your ranged abilities by 6%.
  • Rank 2 – Increases the critical strike damage bonus of your ranged abilities by 12%.
  • Rank 3 – Increases the critical strike damage bonus of your ranged abilities by 18%.
  • Rank 4 – Increases the critical strike damage bonus of your ranged abilities by 24%.
  • Rank 5 – Increases the critical strike damage bonus of your ranged abilities by 30%.

More damage again.  Mortal Shots ultimately increases the damage you’ll get when you crit.  It increases the damage multiplier up to 30% depending on how many points you put into this talent.  Standard spec recommends all 5.

Why not Improved Hunter’s Mark?

First of all, it’s never a bad idea to have a hunter in your raid with some points in this.  You shouldn’t be sacrificing any of the points you’ve put into your tier 2 talents though.  Improved Hunter’s Mark isn’t usually selected because it has a very limited application.  It only impacts the ranged DPS in your raid, and ranged that get the benefit from increased attack power are well… hunters.  Most 25-man raids won’t run with more than 2 or 3 hunters, so the benefit to the whole is minimal.  Your points are much better spent elsewhere — like… Trueshot Aura and Aimed Shot.

My next installment of “What’s that talent do for me?” will cover the third tier of Marksman talents. As always, if you have any questions in the mean time, feel free to email me, or leave something in the comments.

  1. what about push back on focused aim wont that help lots
and you can replace the 96 of hit itemization arp itemization or crit or attackpower

    • The pushback situation on Steady Shot doesn't happen all that often. If you're getting hit by something enough to warrant pushback control, there may be something wrong with where you're standing. If your gear can't get you to 8%, this is a good stand-in until you get it. Another note, end game gear (talking T9, T10) will get you easily to 8% without trying, making these points ultimately useless.

ArP itemization is difficult to justify for a MM hunter until you're able to push close to 1k without procs. Straight Agi/Crit itemization ultimately gives you the best DPS increase. AP is good, but Agi will ultimately increase your AP and Crit at the same time.

I recommend running some DPS numbers for yourself on all of this, as dependent on your gear, you will have to make adjustments to get the best performance out of it. The EJ spreadsheet is very good (it's linked on my blog to the right) as well as femaledwarf.com if you're not able to use Excel.
