Lich King Update

No, I haven’t downed him yet.  Real life has been getting in the way of 10-man, and 25 people is much more difficult to coordinate.

How far have I gotten? Well last night we made some really big progress on 25-man.

Here are my tips so far:

Phase 1:

  • Tranq Shot the Shambling horrors every time they enrage.  Seriously. If even one gets through, your tank will take 45k damage to the face.  They usually don’t like that.
  • DPS on Arthas while you’re not doing the Tranq Shotting.

Phase 1 Transition:

  • Run to the edge.
  • Kill Ice Spheres.
  • MD the raging spirits to a tank.
  • When transition is over, run in to the middle, avoid any Ice Spheres still up.

Phase 2:

  • Stack up for the Valks! Your individual DPS doesn’t matter that much here.  Coordination matters a lot more.
  • If you have more than 1 hunter, drop 1 frost trap in the group where the Valks pick up their victims, and have the other hunter drop a trap in their flight path.
  • As soon as Valks pick their target, spread out.  Defile sucks.
  • Defile spreads faster than you would believe.  Stay away from the guy who it gets cast on.  Don’t even say “oh, I’ll wait until the puddle forms.” You’re wrong.  Get away.  This will wipe your raid.
  • When you have a choice between stacking up again for valks or spreading out for Defile, stack up, but as soon as someone gets picked for Defile, they better run.

That’s as far as I’ve gotten folks!  We’re doing more work on LK tonight, so hopefully I’ll be able to call myself “Kingslayer Morynne” soon. :)

  1. Good tips, and good luck tonight!

I just tried LK for the first time on my hunter in 10-man yesterday. In phase 1, I feel like I'm hardly doing any damage between the tranq shots and MDing ghouls onto the OT.

I tried to put frost traps down on the Valkyr phase but I was having a lot of trouble getting them in the right spot.

    • I feel the same way, but our role in this fight is more support than DPS. I like seeing big numbers on the meters, but I like seeing tanks die less. :)

I was having the same problem with the frost traps. If you only run one hunter, just drop it in your stack, it'll pop when the valks come down. The other tip I have for dealing with the valks is get assignments to who is stunning what mark.

  2. Yay for progress :D Keep working on it!

P3: We dont drop frost traps because frost traps can hide defiles (http://lyraat.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/defileunderfrosttrap1.jpg) We use snake traps instead. Not a huge deal as other snares and slows work, too.

    • Typically we scatter as soon as the valks pick up their target, so the frost trap can't hide anything. We've only run into the issue when we get to the point where the valks and defile happen close to the same time.

  3. I'd turn on chat bubbles and use them for defiles. I know the DBM addon in patricular will announce in yell Defile. We're working on LK 25HM and its a blessing for shadow traps which you often can't see because everyone is stacked up for raid healing.

Everyone needs to stack up for valks because other wise it gets messy and you can have valks moving back over old defiles because everyone is spread.

I always let out a sigh of relief every time we make it past that phase.

    • It's good to know, I'll have to turn on chat bubbles tonight, but I'm afraid it's going to drive me nuts. Worth a shot though.

We're doing pretty well stacking up for Valks, but when the defile and the Valks happen at about the same time, we start to run into problems.

I'm sure I'll breathe a huge sigh of relief once we're past that phase… We keep wiping around 50%, so we're almost there!
