This fight is not especially different in heroic for a DPS.  The kill priority is the same.

Major differences:

  • Healers going into the portals will take some minor damage.
  • AOE damage from mobs will reduce the health of Dreamwalker.
  • Archmages frostbolt ability will drain mana, so interrupts are now more important than ever.

How does this change the hunter role?

  • Hunters are likely given a different task than most other DPS because we’re good at kiting. (or should be!)
  • Hunter priority will change to Kite Zombies -> Blazing Skeletons -> Supressers -> Mages -> Abominations

Besides kiting the zombies, DPS your heart out on the mobs and pray your healers can get it done.

Upgraded Hunter Loot:

  • Legguards of the Twisted Dream – 10m – These are a great pair of legs if you are desperate for hit rating, but I’d opt for the 3/3 in Focused Aim instead.
  • Frostbrood Sapphire Ring – 25m – Easily best in slot ring for ArP MM hunters.
  • Anub’ar Stalker’s Gloves – 25m – If you’re to the point where you have access to ilvl 277 gear, I’d skip these.  Haste is wasted for the most part on hunters, and this would be better suited for an Enhancement Shaman’s off-set piece.

Queen Lana'thel

Major Differences

  • Lana’thel will have a buff that stacks the more bites that are out called Presence of the Darkfallen.  I’m not sure if it’s a 5% or 10% increase each stack, but when you consider the majority of your raid being bitten by the end — it hurts pretty bad.  Healers need to be prepared.

The fight mechanics for a DPS are exactly the same.  Run in when you get Pact of the Darkfallen, get out when you have Swarming Shadows (really, purple fire).  DPS your heart out, bite others when it’s time, and stay spread out during air phase.

Major Differences

  • Kinetic Bombs will drop faster.  Much faster.  One or two ranged will not be able to do this.  Need to have everyone work on this.
  • Any movement (self-generated or knockback from something) will incur a stacking debuff called Shadow Prison.

What does this mean?

Well, for starters, your raid needs to be spread out all over the room, and your ranged should especially be spread out to handle the Kinetic Bombs.  It also means that any unnecessary movement should be avoided.  If the prince near you is not the one you can currently deal damage to, sit there, look pretty, regen mana, hit Kinetic Bombs, and MD Dark Nuclei to your tank for Prince Keleseth.  When the focus changes to the one near you, DPS your brains out, but don’t forget, as range, that your primary focus will be on the Kinetic Bombs.

Major Differences:

  • Professor Putricide does Vile Gas during the fight — just like Festergut.  The Vile Gas makes you puke all over the place, incapacitated for a short while.  This ability forces the raid to be much more spread out than the original strategy.  Can’t have the whole raid incapacitated at the same time, now can we?
  • The Ooze Floods are significantly larger this time.  You will have to move out of them, they also hit harder.  Your off-tank will no longer be able to kite the slimes through the floods — it hurts too much.
  • The Mutated Infection hits like a mack truck.  You will need a dispeller to get this off of the targeted person quickly.

For a Hunter, this fight is effectively the same — you’re not changing what you do besides your placement on the fight and being more spatially aware.  Range finders are your friend here — set them to 10-yards and stay away from people.  Knowing that there is a lot of moving around on this fight, between the spreading out, getting out of the floods, running from the Unstable Ooze Explosions, and if you get the infection, running to the off-tank, don’t be overly surprised if you see your DPS drop.

*Note: At this point in loot, I would not recommend taking the Dual Bladed Pauldrons — these are better suited for an Enhancement Shaman needing the haste.

ICC Heroic: Festergut

Major Changes:

  • Malleable Goo – just like Putricide.  Stay out of it, it slows your swing timers to nearly a halt.
  • You MUST get 3 stacks of the Innoculation buff.  You will die without it.

Here’s the tricky part– Of course Putricide is throwing Malleable Goo all over the place, doing obscene amounts of raid damage, and naturally he has to throw Goo right when you have to bunch up for spores.  You have to make adjustments.  The people who have the spore need to be vocal if a Goo is coming their direction, and the group that is waiting for the spore to pop need to move with the spore person.  Without doing this, you will end up wiping the raid — taking too much damage that the Goo-inflicted healers won’t be able to heal through.

Changes from normal mode:

  • Cultists still spawn — even in phase 2. Remember, these have to go down quickly.
  • Deathwhisper isn’t tauntable in phase 2.
  • On 10-man she will start using Dominate Mind

What does this mean

  1. You have to be good at switching to adds.
  2. MD the tank in phase 2.  Without the additional threat, the raid will get wiped.
  3. Watch your feet.  Green stuff and ghosts will try to kill you.  Stay away from both.

Base strategy

Really not much difference, but know that the axes do more damage, as do the rockets.

Your cannon-folk should focus their efforts to taking out the rocket guys in the back.  The longer they’re up, the more damage they do.

If you get hit by a rocket, you will be knocked back, and possibly off the ship, so be careful, stay out of those.

Now that Lich King has fallen, my goal will be to provide updated information on the encounters as I go through them on Heroic mode.

Boss Changes

  • Increased HP and damage outputs
  • Bone Spike Graveyard cast during Bone Storm
  • Coldflame stays on the ground for 8 seconds, instead of just 3 from regular.

What does this mean?

  1. Your DPS needs to be top-notch.  Bone spikes hurt a heck of a lot more, dealing 10% damage per second on top of the 9000 direct damage they initially deal.
  2. Coldflame stays on the ground longer, which means you need to be very spatially aware.  Deterrence works to mitigate some of that damage, though I’d recommend saving it for Bone Storm.

Lich King Update #2

Nope. Still haven’t killed him.

Our best attempt is 16% so far, and considering we get to that point pretty regularly, I’m confident in saying I can write up a few more notes on how to beat down Arthas.

My first set of tips for Lich King are here, so if you’re a new reader, it will catch you up.

We’ve made some really solid progress with Phase 2.  The Valks/Defiles are not easy to manage, but with practice your raid will get it, I swear.  Phase 2 lasts until Arthas gets to 40%, then back into another transition phase.

Transition Phase (from 2-3):

  • Same as the first.
  • Raging spirits need to be beasted down quickly.  Heroism is most appropriately used for this phase.
  • Misdirect as much as possible for the Raging Spirits. Your tanks will thank you.
  • LOTS more Ice Spheres. If your range weren’t helping you before, they must help you now.  There are far too many for just 1 or 2 hunters to get through.
  • If you happen to be the lucky SOB who gets a raging spirit, feign death.  It will save you.  They tend to want to stomp their clone’s face as soon as they’re up.

Phase 3:

  • Range’s responsibility is to kill Vile Spirits.  Do yourself the favor, make a macro.
    • /tar Vile Spirit
    • /cast Steady Shot
  • Do not stand in the middle of the circle.  If you happen to get defile, you’re dropping it in the middle of your tank’s path.  Stick to the outside ring of the circle, placement of defile will be much better.
  • Run from Vile Spirits if they start coming after you.  You should have an off-tank or a “soaker” who can take the explosions from the Vile Spirits, but if one gets to you, be prepared.
